The following are the primary types of overt photography:

- Static public items

- Moving public items

- Static private items

- Moving private items

The reasoning for the lack of overt personal photography is due to legal reasons, the same reason surveillance of individuals is always covert. Causing alarm & distress or someone knowingly becoming aware of surveillance fall foul of criminal law.

When it comes to the art of capturing still subjects through the lens, photography tends to follow a relatively straightforward path, dictated largely by the level of access required. Here, the versatile telephoto lenses step into the limelight, presenting an array of possibilities, offering us the flexibility to reach beyond the ordinary. Conversely, when the constraints of physical separation come into play, wide-angle lenses emerge as the unsung heroes, diligently carving their niche in the photographic toolkit.

In this realm, we often find ourselves succumbing to routine, neglecting the unconventional aids that can elevate our craft. The tripod, that steadfast companion, often relegated to stationary setups, can be our silent ally in the quest for photographic excellence. It's a reminder that as private investigators, we should seize every opportunity to stretch the boundaries of our photography skills when operating in open environments.

However, the scenario shifts dramatically when our focus shifts to dynamic subjects in motion. The very familiarity that once provided solace now beckons us to recalibrate our approach. Higher shutter speeds become the order of the day, demanding a more dynamic selection of lenses based on the fluidity of the photographer's perspective. Here, the camcorder assumes a prominent role, transcending the realm of static images to capture the essence of movement, while mirrorless cameras dazzle with their ability to deliver lightning-fast frames per second, ensuring pristine image quality.

The age-old tradition of shooting in raw format retains its eminence, offering an array of post-processing possibilities. However, amidst the excitement of dynamic photography, let us not forget the unexplored realm of extended shutter speeds, where static objects can come to life in new and unexpected ways.

Trespass and the sanctity of private property pose a conundrum, one where the lines between legality and professionalism often blur. Trespass, devoid of criminality, may seem like a blessing, but in our professional capacity, it carries its own set of civil liability conundrums, not to mention the question of professional ethics. In these instances, telephoto lenses come to our aid once again, providing the much-needed distance to maintain our integrity. Yet, the often overlooked technique of simply seeking permission can be a powerful tool, bridging the gap between our investigative duties and our commitment to professionalism. Refer to our blog on lens selection for an in-depth exploration of these strategies.

When tasked with observing private objects in motion, a predicament may arise when distance becomes an insurmountable barrier. Here, our investigative prowess faces a unique challenge, one where adaptability and innovation become our allies in achieving our objectives.

A common problem all agents encounter, especially so in cities is the problem of parking. A good parking location for a vehicle is essential in ensuring line of sight (LOS) and gathering recordings behind tint or disguised. Now you may be thinking, you would solve this problem through foot surveillance. This isn't always helpful, residential areas may not have many people on foot nearby, there may be nowhere to sit or bled in and a host of other reasons may want your bottom firmly planted in a car seat for this one. So you arrive or even better, as part of a recce (reconnaissance) or planning, you notice a parking problem. I find it helpful to break up the different problems into categories, I will list the types of scenarios. 2 Primary types of areas Urban - City or Town Rural - Villages, farms, greenery or forests Primary types of problems No LOS - Cannot observe the property or points of egress LOS but too distant - Cannot record of observe with any accuracy or with the level of responsiveness needed LOS but blocked - Your vision is obstructed temporarily Too close - The risk of exposure is too high and no places further away are available Primary causes of problems Temporary blockage by vehicle - A behemoth has just parked in your LOS Double yellow lines - No parking here Single yellow lines - Restricted at certain times, they will always be the times you need to be their All spaces are in use - The most frequent issue Moved too many times already - You've been moving around frequently and are reaching a point where further movement between spaces will compromise the surveillance A mixture - A mix of the above It is incredibly frustrating when your turn up to perform your surveillance and have nowhere to park. You know the client will not be happy and your stuck in a tough spot. Parking for private investigators is an essential part of the work and for some cases is strictly required to ensure good results.
